I've also caught ones that size off of Quadra. They were caught on my fly rod from my kayak and that was an experience and a half.

I never knew dogfish was edible let alone made into fish and chips in the UK.
All dogfish I have seen caught were released right back into the sea as nobody wanted them.
Does it taste like white fish?

I see them for sale in asian supermarkets, but never tried them myself. Just catch and release.

If you soak them in milk for a while, then cook in a black bean sauce, the taste is very good.  (like a whitefish).  However, make sure you eat the smaller ones because the mercury levels in larger ones is high.

If you go to the steveston boat dock in Richmond during weekends, you can find people trying to sell foot long doggies from the boat.... never seen people buying it..

The pier was damaged during last December's high tide and storm surge that damaged the Stanley Park seawall. Closure is supposed to be temporary.

Does anyone know the current status?  A quick google showed this http://vancouver.ca/news-calendar/portion-of-stanley-park-seawall-temporarily-closed.aspx that says it's indeed temporary.

It's ok it's just that there are dozens of better tasting fish to eat, the flesh is quite dense not to everyone's taste.

BTW-I was wrong when I said that it was Jedediah Island where the biggest Dogfish in the strait were found-someone reminded me it was actually Fagin Island.

In any case I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of these 4 & 5 foot Dogfish caught from the beach off Jericho.

Does anybody know if the pier has opened up again since being shut down earlier for repairs?

Thanks

Check out this link...

You will see the wharf....
zoom in one more level and you will see no more wharf  :)

Looks like a nice new beach was created in place of the wharf.

Hi cutthroat,

Thanks for the quick response. According to the link, the pier still exists. It's the wooden dock that everybody crabs and fishes off. It's right off discovery road. It was closed for repairs earlier this year. I'm wondering if it has opened up again.

Like Shawn mentioned, you'd be surprised how fished out the area directly around the pier is. If the water's deep enough/tide low enough, I'd suggest walking down the beach a bit and casting straight out as far as you can. Use prawns of sea worms for bait. You have a chance at catching bullhead, flounder, sole, surfperch and Whitespotted Greenling among other things in that area. Good luck!

wow, surfperch? Love those. Have you caught any down there recently? High tide?
Like these?
I caught the striped surfperch in locally and the redtail surf perch on vancouver island.

Hello Rod, yes the redtail was caught on the WCVI. Do you know if these are present down here in the lower mainland? They are real beauties, so are the striped when the sun reveals their blue stripes.
