Chilcotin River
« on: August 30, 2004, 12:34:26 AM »

Heard tonight a mud slide has occured and blocked off the river? Anyone confirm this and possible devastations to amounts of salmon that go up that system? :(

Hitting Google News produced no results.   Will be interesting to hear what happened, and what they might be able  to do, if it did.

Local fishermen worry the slide could do irreparable damage to salmon runs.

"The last time [a slide occurred] it was over a two-year period it took for the fish to come back," said Greg Ashley of the Williams Lake First Nations band.

"We know there's a big run coming, so I'm hoping it clears up and at least some of them can come through.... It could be a huge impact on the fish."

Just talked to Nick he has been told the Fraser in Chilliwack dropped 2 feet verticial over night because of the upstream blockage on the Chilcotin.
Will check it out and report back later.

Just checked the river gauge at Hope and it dropped a foot there overnight so do not think it would have dropped 2 feet verticial here.

I've fished and rafted the Chilcotin-it's happened before and it'll happen again.
Years ago a 2 foot wave swept all the way to Steveston when the dam broke on the Chicotin.
However it's important to remember that these are not complete blockages-if they were the resulting lake behind the slide would devastate that area.
In good time the dam will loosen/let go and the mud will sweep down and things will go back to normal-they always do.

It'll suck trying to bar fish or just plain fish period when the debris hits down here sometime early tomorrow morning.

Though there is a plus...just try and set a net for the next couple of days... ;D

Just received notice re a e-mail a large debris flow is in the Lillooet area on the Fraser now and will be reaching our area some time over night or early morning.

So I would advise to keep off the Fraser River for a few days until it passes.
