And to add...being a March 12th derby lets not forget that the remaining run of wild fish will be in full swing at this point in the season and the man made hatchery fish will be winding down. Our beautiful wild char will be showing up for the fry feast & don't need the extra pressure brought on by a for-profit meat derby.

With warm weather & longer days the river is already a very busy place at this time of year, especially on the weekend...why invite another 100 plus anglers to an already overcrowded ecosystem...can our remaining wild fish take the added pressures associated with derbies?

I feel bad for those steelhead anglers that can only get out on weekends. Finally a chance to hit the river and Whammo! There's a derby on your day off...wtf!!

I don't think a fishing derby on the Vedder would have any more impact by anglers than a nice sunny long weekend would.

With this kind of statement one would think that derby participants only fish when there are derbies? I would hazard a guess to say that most participants would be fishing the river anyways regardless of whether or not a derby is taking place.

If the pro-derby crowd still isn't convinced why a steelhead derby isn't a good thing for the fish (no derby is, really), so be it.
Pay your fee, take part and continue being happy.

Those of us who have come to realize the negative impact of yet another non-conservation oriented derby will stay off the river that day.

Peace.

This thread is hilarious!

Reasons that fishing derbys should be banned:
... "fishing derby's are a disgrace"
... "they don't contribute anything to the welfare of the river or the fish"
... "The killing of all the fish would be just to pound some chests and get some prizes"
... "it's just feeding egos"
... "It all seems to be about prizes prizes prizes"

Can I add?

... "you'll just end up taking the steelhead home and eating it!"  ;D  ;D

Maybe, because this derby is named after a large wet rodent with a worm like tail?
Don't know if I would want to be labeled one of those creatures at my age. ;)

Ricks derby was going to donate most of the monies back into the river. This derby is purely for the anglers and not the fish.

I dont care if you like derbies or not its a personal choice as is everything in life. This is a forum where we express our opinions and lots of us here feel derbies like these are nothing more than to feed the ego.

I personally dont kill any steelhead ever so its a no brainer to me.

In those sports your not killing anything plus it does not take money to keep the sport going. This fishery that everyone enjoys on the Vedder or any other hatchery enhanced river takes money to make it sustainable. The more money to the hatcheries and restoration means more fishing opportunities. Now if their is no money than that means no fish.

I played competitive sports most of my life. To me fishing is not a competitive sport. Its a relaxing hobby that I enjoy with friends.

The fishery everyone enjoys on the Veddar is enhanced through the purchase of our freshwater licenses, and additional tags, just like derby's held every year on lakes, and in the oceans, the money to support these endeavors comes from licencing, and yes, sometimes, it is all about the chest pounding, just like scoring a goal, or hitting a home run, or participating in a body building show. Many amateur sports do receive funding from govt (or used to before the Liberals got in there)

Don't know about Bobo, but I am...we are organizing a big memorial to our ChumMaster skipper Dennis Devereaux who passed away recently. the likes of IronNoggin, Liptugger, Comoxian and others will be there. It will be my last chum derby ever.
And, just like in previous years when Dennis was alive, we will NOT partake in the weigh-in and other prize related activities because for us it is not about that.

Besides, Bruce, a little controversy doesn't hurt.
Like in: you fish for sturgeon , I don't. You don't floss sockeye, I do. I am way more ethical than you!  ;D

Why do you need to point out who will be attending, I doubt anyone cares...?  I find it B.S how a few clowns on here are bashing this guys derby.

All you guys saying that derbys are the devil need to really pull your heads out of your bum and quit making a fool of yourself. The river is a GONGSHOW already, and only hatcherys would be killed anyways.....what they are there for lol.
