I had a similar experience early november, I was using a bead and a lot of bobber downs but not hooking any fish. I switched to a small hook and put the same bead just above the hook to see if its whitefish/trout in that same spot - Turns out to be whitefish. I am guessing all those bobber downs could be these smaller fish. I was using somewhat light bobber - 15g
