Ok here's your answer:

Lower Fraser (mouth to Yale) to date total harvests (including ceremonial):

FN chinook:  31,495 (+ 10% non reporting)

FN steelhead: 32 (most likely Coq summers)

FN sockeye: 361,895
.....................................

*note*- chinook harvest of 4669 and sockeye harvest of 78,885 taken from Mission to Hope, equivilent to the Fraser rec fishery zone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So here is some numbers to review. All numbers are based on the equivilent to recreational angling area zones. ie- above Hope isn't included in FN harvest.

Lower Fraser 2003 total harvest by all groups:

Commercial (including Tidal mouth and Lower Georgia Straight):
Chinook:     9,805
Sockeye: 194,489

FN (unfortunately they show only 2004 to date #'s):
Chinook:   14,198
Sockeye: 233,203

Recreational:
Chinook: 10,698 (including jacks)
Sockeye: 73,393

Now for curiousity purposes for those who didn't concern themselves with commercial harvest numbers say 10 years ago...review this:

These #'s reflect gill and troll harvest including area 28 (Howe Sound/Burrard Inlet) and 29 (Fraser)

Chinook:      13,756
Sockeye: 1,638,794
Coho:             7,145

Interesting?

Wonder if DFO is considering forcing people to release Chinooks if your leader length is greater than 36 inches.  It might make sense you can fish Sockeye but if you catch a spring you have to let it go.

Any thoughts?

As I read Bantams number the total recreational catch is about 30% of the total.

The net fisheries are a far bigger threat to Chinooks than the recreational. The commercial (non native portion) catch as much as the recreational, but they do it in a small number of very brief openings where they clean out the river, making it very easy to destroy a small run of fish travelling together. The recreational catch a "smaller catch percentage over longer period of time" making it far less likely to wipe out a small run.

As far as the commercial being around longer than the sport guys, it was about 10 years ago that DFO priority for the Chinook fishery was changed from commercial to sport. Its priority is now conservation, aboriginal food, sport, then commercail for chinooks (previously commercail and sport were reversed). The obvious reason for thte change is the much greater value obtained bys sport fishing as compared to commercial. This reduction in commercail catch is one of the reasons for the improvement in most chinook stocks in recent years.

I'm not such a big fan of BB either, and it wouldn't hurt my feeling too much if it went away, but lets look at the facts.

Well gman I understand your thinking here, but also don't totally agree. Commercial harvest have/will and probably will be continuing for sometime on the Fraser. FN harvest the same. What we've done is add a new more effective harvest tool, the rec angler. Which harvest method will destoy some chinook runs? Currently it seems DFO hasn't expressed any worry on Fraser migrating chinook runs in jeopardy, unlike the Thompson coho. I'm simply stating with this new additional effective harvest they will be SOON.

I'd also like to add that I don't factor in dollars and cents when I'm concerned with our fish and wildlife resources since to me they're priceless. Yes the government will play economic politics, but at what price? And it's always easy to shift blame when the damage is done.

I think you have to look at all the numbers before you make a final judgement. If you take a look at the hours of effort to the number of fish in total caught , it took 6.63 hours for every fish caught that is on whole mainstem of the Fraser.
