We (taxpayers) pay fish farms money for destroying diseased fish...ridiculous.

Can't believe this. What a sad state of affairs. We (taxpayers) pay fish farms money for destroying diseased fish that the fish farms brought to our waters in the first place. Outrageous.

Well when crusty Clark was losing in the polls at election time she got a massive "donation" from the owners of said farms so don't expect things to change anytime soon, the waters are just another business opportunity

As the farms are in the ocean it isn't under provincial jurisdiction, the money is doled out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency a federal agency.

Fish farms are treated as agriculture. You can argue that no farmer should be "bailed out" due to disease but this is not unique to fish farms.
This support is provided because food is considered an essential service - a catastrophic problem for farmer's is very bad for all Canadian people.

Yeah the problem is that catastrophic problems for farmers can also be catastrophic to wild salmon and the industries/fisheries that are dependent on them. 

It is not a coincidence that the author of this article has also written many books on sportfishing including a book that I really liked - Maximum Salmon.

Also your use of the term 'farmer' is misleading Typhoon.  It is not like these are little mom and pop operations running this industry.  As most of us already know, these are huge multi-billion dollar corporations and are pretty much all Norwegian owned. 

They don't need our money and are taking advantage.

What bothers me is that they are actually more regulated in Norway than here, and that the Americans are also very willing to impose restrictions on this industry and take strong stands on the issue. We are so unwilling, scared, and maybe corrupt to take any kind of stand that things just get more ridiculous.
