Title: Red Sockeye?

Was thinking about changing my display picture. I Googled images for sockeye. Most of the pictures showed a red fish. Some also had big bottom teeth, ugly little guys. Do they look different in ocean water or something? Or is it just sockeye from another part of the world? What's the deal?

when they enter freshwater they turn colour, and the males get a hooked mouth.

So in the ocean the sockeye I have in my freezer were that vibrant red?

in the ocean salmon are silver/chrome. When salmon got into a river, example vedder, they turn colour, so yes, if the sockeye in your freezer went up a freshwater river, it would change colour.

Ok then, the sockeye in my freezer 'would have become' that color.

When sockeyes are in fresh water for a while, it undergoes a metamorphosis. The body turns red and the head green.

RobertO, each one of the different five species turn different spawning colors.  

Once a fish starts to color up it is a good indication that the fish will be less and less table worthy.  

Colored fish really shouldnt be targeted as they wont make a good food fish, they are focused on spawning and have dwindling energy/resources as why tax them by playing them in.

If you get a chance in October, you can see the famous Adams River sockeye run.  Thousands of tourists check out the crimson sockeye pair up, and uh, you know... spawn til they die.
