Grease VS Oil in your center pin
« on: February 16, 2006, 07:05:26 AM »

Hey gang, just wanted to share an experience from the stamp.

After cleaning and regreasing my dad bait caster on the ferry ride over, I decided to apply a little grease to my center pin.  It spun so smoothly all moring.  Then by afternoon, casting seemed to become more difficult on those longer casts.  I put a drop of oil on and I was off to the races again.

My question is, does grease dry out quicker than oil thus loosing some of its effectiveness???

I do not know about grease in reels. But grease generally tends to harden and collects dust and grime all combined make a sticky mess. Oil on the other hand is much less of a grime collector and thus more reliable to keep things running smooth. Most oils such as gun oil WD40 and such, clean as well as they lubricate and dissipate water something grease does not do.

Personally i stay away from grease in all of my reels , i find the dirt sticks to it easier and on colder days the grease tends to stiffen up which will make the reel not perform as smooth .

I was also wondering and it seems oil is the way to go.

I doubt it was a factor of the grease getting dirty as we were in a boat and my reel never touched the gound or even got wet...if I had to guess, seemd like the grease thickened up and just stopped working as well.

Do you think that with the high viscosity of oil means that once you apply it, it could simply run off the spindle hence its lubricating properties could be minimised quickly too???

Use the Abu Garcia reel oil. Best stuff I've found and I recommend it to most of my customers.

Sewing Machine Oil for the Pin. Best thing I've found, and the Islander wants to spin forever with it...
Especially usefull in the COLD! The pin will work in a LOT colder weather than your hands will with that light machine oil!

Cheers,

Grease has different operating temp.
Unless you apply right grease for it's operation temperature or you will run into problems. Oil is not as finicky.

I use Remington's Gun oil which is silicone based. I spray it onto a piece of cloth and then rub all the parts and the reel also on the outside. This oil will keep the water off everything but will not smear as some oils do. If I am desperate I even will use this oil to make the part of the fishing line floating if needed, i.e walking the dog.

I have to agree with IronNoggin!
I have only used light weight 3in1 and sewing machine oil. I figure if it's good enough for a $50.000 sawing machine, it' plenty good for a pin. Spins all day and if not over lubed stays in the reel. Bearing or bushing.
Plus it leaves no deposits behind to build up and get caky. Wipes out easy for clean up to.
