Davis Bay, Sechelt, Feb 11
« on: February 12, 2006, 12:39:23 AM »

About a week ago my wife had a real surprise for me in the form of fishing charter as a birthday gift. Wow, I was a happy camper. So, on Feb 4th we woke up early to head out to Sechelt for an adventure. As soon as I opened my eyes I have noticed that wind was very strong outside and that rain was just coming down. Not knowing anything about ocean fishing I didn't want to be too pessimistic but I was thinking that there is no way there would be any fishing. As we were hitting the door, the phone rang, and my suspicions got confirmed. Our charter guy was calling to say it would be the best to do it another day. I actually wasn't disappointed, but happy that the guy was honest and really wanted us to have a good time.

So, we re-booked the trip for today. Today we got up around 7am, got our breakfast, and headed out around 8am. We were in Sechelt at about 10:30am. Went to Tim Hortons for second breakfast :), and a coffee. After that we met our guide Bob Dixon of Davis Bay Sports Fishing in a coffee shop, and headed out. The day started slow but Bob made sure we were entertained properly with his stories. About hour into fishing (around 12:30-1pm), we were into our first fish. It was a just a tad too small of a spring to keep. About 1 to 1.5 hours later we were into second fish, a bit bigger, and this time even closer to the limit, but just not big enough yet. Finally around 3-3:30pm, one of rods just jumps. Bob makes sure that the fish is on and pass the rod to me. About 5 seconds later this fish was rocketing out of water in a big jump and jump, and  jump, .... I though that seal must chased it but that wasn't the case. It gave me a real fight. Went under the boat, and I didn't have an idea what to do. It started going toward other side, and Bob was urgently saying to turn around and got fish around the nose of boat or the line will get cut. So I did it. After a long fight that gave me a sore arm, and about 15 minutes later, fish was finally tired, and we boated it. My first ocean caught salmon - a very nice 12 pound red spring.

After that we had few flounders on, and finally call it off about 4pm. Though that wasn't the end of our trip. Bob headed to prawn and crab traps he set up earlier. We actually got a salmon, and limit of crabs and limit of prawns. Just an unbelievable day. Specially for my first day ocean fishing ever.

We got all fish to bite at around 180 to 200 feet depth, with no flasher and on mojo and an army/truck coyotes. Fish we got had few herrings in its belly.

I think I got hooked on this ocean thing :) ! Can't wait to be in a position to own my own boat one day. Do not know if this is OK to say Rod (it can sound as advertising), but I would recommend this guy to anyone trying out ocean fishing.

Nice report and good on catching a nice Winter Spring. It should make lovely eating as well as the prawns and the crabs. ;D

Ocean fishing is always a good change from fishing the rivers. Glad you had an enjoable trip and thanks for the report on it.
