« on: August 27, 2005, 12:22:37 AM »

ok i'll be truthfull...i'm not the best fisherman, hunter yes...

I'd like to take my oldest daughter (9) out to the old Habour Air Dock site (New West) across from the old Pen for pinks...what do we need for tackle and what type of water do pinks like? and is it to early? we'd be fishing off of the dock

thanks

Nothing too extravagant. A light spinning rod with 10 lb. test. Cast any pink lures such as 1/2 oz zzingers, buzz bombs, Krocodile spoons etc.

Careful out there.  Last time I went there, the dock was in pretty bad shape as I remember and may not be too safe.  Since Harbour Air left the dock has not been maintained, unless someone's gone in and fixed it up in the last couple of years since I've been there last.  Try Haney dock instead, just off the Haney bypass by the Billy Miner pub.

I would like to trade some fishing secrets for some hunted meat. :D I don't like hunting but I sure like to eat meat... :-[

Anyways, if you are coming from New West, there are several other spots that you may want to try out with your kid. River Road in Delta between Alex Fraser Bridge and the tunnel can be good at times. The only thing I do not like down there is the distance to the road, too noisy. Annacis Island has some spots available, but I am not as familiar with them. If you are willing to drive further, Richmond around Steveston area can be excellent in the first week of September. Lots of fishing space, friendly crowd and the view ain't that bad either. If you come down this way, I'll be out there fishing and can bring a bunch of those salmon id cards and other educational fishing goodies for your daughter and her friends or siblings.

You want to fish during the incoming tide, from two hours before peak to when the water is peaking.

Get some Gibbs Croc spoons, 1/4oz ones. The patterns you want are:

Do the casts for her if she has never spincasted before, so you can get the distance. Let her slowly retrieve the lure, make sure the rod tip is pointing towards the water. When the spoon gets closer to shore, tell her to reel in a bit faster so you do not snag up.

Ive landed sevral large coho's with the top spoon^^^
But the main thing that I have found with pinks is that they are not pickey, if you present a lure to them they are likely to bite.

Hi Rod, I thought you have your own home-made spoons that will outperform other spoons like Gibb's.  Do you have them available now.  I have friends living in Richmond who would like to try this pink fishing, and buying your dynamite spoons will help them get into fish.  By the way, what size or type of lead will be used for spoon?  Do you find fish bite more at top, mid, or bottom part of the river fishing with spoon?

As a general rule you don't use weights with spoons.

in a pinch i just spray paint a couple of old kroc spoons hot pink and use them next day. it works quite good. and just because you see no fish surfacing or jumping  does not mean there isn't any around. just keep casting with a slow moderate retrieve. hot orange also works for me. always keep your hook point sharp. the early run i noticed are quite sparse and that one hit may be your only one for the day so keep your hooks sharp.

Good point peacan sam, surface activity doesn't necessarily indicate how good the fishing is. Today we saw almost no surface activity, but there were definitely fish around. Other days the surface can be boiling with fish, but the bites are slow.

funfish, I am out of spoons right now! I won't have any until mid next week earliest.

BCHunter, I've tried deer, moose, caribou, black bear.

So far I've only used the one spoon, the same one that I used two years ago. ;D Pink striped with a bit of pink prism tape on one side.

Other colours that worked well for me in the past included orange and green. I've also did good with just plain silver spoons.
