Abu Sixstar rebuild
« on: May 31, 2005, 11:08:57 PM »

A buddy has one of these, he bought a few years ago as a cheap starter reel ::). I was wondering whether it's possible to rebuild the thing with higher end (better quality) gearing etc. in an effort to improve the performance and durability? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It has only one bearing in the spool, so you can swap the bushing with a second bearing, it also uses a dog for anti reverse instead of a  one-way roller bearing found on C3 or higher models. To replace the anti reverse dog with a one-way roller bearing you would need to get a new left plate, which would add with a roller to a $30 USD or so. I would forget about the one-way roller. I would also check the washers and replace them is they are worn out, and the pinion gear and the drive gear, if worn out a lot, should be replaced (I just swapped mine on C3 after 6 seasons). Also pawl and a worm drive should be checked and replaced if pawl does not switch properly. For schematics got to http://www.hookandsinker.com (you will need to register) and for reel parts: Russ @ http://www.rodandreel.ca (Surrey)  or Mike @ http://www.mikesreelrepair.com (Abbotsford) The link to six star schematics: http://www.hookandsinker.com/reel/Abu/six%20star%20(07%2000).pdf

For all that trouble you'll still have a cheapo reel-why bother?
