What to do with the 124lb catfish if you caught it?
« on: May 27, 2005, 02:12:23 PM »

Those of you who have followed the story about the fisherman who caught the 124lb world record catfish probably already know that the fish has since died while being transported to the aquarium display at Cabela's Outfitter store.

Great that he caught a big one, most people don't get to experience that in this lifetime. Hmm... but what's with the ego thing? Was it really necessary to haul it out of its home, jeopardize its life by caging it if he was not going to eat it? What do you think? ::)

my normal response would be to batter and fry that baby up for all the neighbors, but I think I'd be afraid to eat such a large and old bottom feeder for fear of things like mercury and pcbs.

Ditto on the fear of bottom feeder poisoning.

Also, not sure about Catfish - I've never had it before.

Apparently they are quite delicious. Seems like any fish that are ugly are very good tasting.

OK - How many actually "good looking" fish do YOU know of?

I'm curious as to the context of that picture.

What's all this world record stuff at 124lb??

Have a look at some real Catfish http://www.catfishcapers.co.uk/html/ebro_2005.html

These things eat 20lb+ Carp!!  So doubt if you would "noodle" for them??

OK!  They are European Catfish [Wels].  But they are BBBBBBBBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Oh and extremely slimy.  A change of clothing is needed along with a bonfire for the old set of clothes.

My grandparents (in UK) sent me an article of a wels that weighed something like 700 lbs...ok, maybe it wasn't that big, but it was bloody big.

Wat type of rod would you use for wels ? Sturgeon ? or is it a little more finesse ?

As for the blue cat, you never know what a fish that size has had to eat, so I would be careful. Did he get to eat it in the end ?  :P

Catfish are very tasty.  Only large bones.  No scales.

Some of the big lakes in Poland etc have produced fish to 600-700lbs but generally to netsmen.

The guys I know who go to Spain after Cats use rods of 5lb test curve

You forgot one other choice:

"kept it alive, mounted it"
