Some river related news:

Outdoor Recreation Council of BC released this year's endangered rivers list. Fraser River has returned to top spot of the list. Read the news release.

Some encouraging and exciting news as well.

World Rivers Day Initiative

The United Nations is launching the "Water for Life Decade" this year, to bring a higher profile to global water issues. As part of this, river enthusiasts from around the world are coming together to participate in the inaugural "World Rivers Day" on September 25th, 2005.

In future, this event will take place annually on the last Sunday in September and is intended to be a celebration of the world's waterways. This will be patterned after the highly successful BC Rivers Day in western Canada, which is already one of the biggest events of its kind in the world, attracting up to 75,000 people annually.

World Rivers Day will highlight the many values of our waterways. It will also strive to increase public awareness and hopefully encourage the improved stewardship of rivers around the world. Rivers in every country face an array of threats and the better caring of our rivers and streams is an essential component of any effort to be better water stewards.

World Rivers Day Events
There are lots of ways that groups and communities can get involved in Rivers Day. Consider planning a local event which can range from stream cleanups and fish enhancement projects to educational outings and community riverside celebrations.

Join the Celebration!

I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate those who have been involved with the Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanups and the making of the last three Vedder River Festival (hosted during BC Rivers Day). It's wonderful to know that every single one of you who have come out in the past are setting an example for the rest of the globe to follow.

The Chilliwack/Vedder system has also made the "list." This whole topic is really quite scary and I personally wonder when governments will take some action. I realize that action is costly not only to repair the damage already done but also in saying "no" to some development proposals. These costs, however, are petty cash to the future cost of ignoring the problems. Perhaps the United Nations incentive will spur some positive change.

Something that Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Coalition and all their volunteers can be very proud of that we are trying to improve things in the recreational corridor of the Chilliwack watershed.

Even though the Chilliwack River made the top 10 we are doing our part to make it better. If all the tonnes of garbage that we have removed the last 3 years was left on the river banks with some of it being washed into the Fraser River and out to Georgia Strait it would have been a lot worse for the environment.

We and our many devoted volunteers will continue to work hard to try and get it removed from the list for next year.
