I don’t think it’s doing much harm, it’s been used for 50 years.You could say a lot of things are not good for native species. Would be a huge list, with borax near the bottom. Lol

be careful here as salt or better table salt,  is the commonly used term for Sodium Chloride while borax is chemically a salt more correctly called sodium tetra borate. Salts are formed by the interaction of an acid with a base to form a cyrstalline powder in it's solid state. While it take 10 to 25 grams of borax to kill an adult and more than 25 grams of sodium chloride to do the same, borax is more corrosive and capable of causing eye injuries or serious skin irritations and much more so than table salt. The most common form of salt poisoning is drinking sea water and according to wikipedia  "the median lethal dose of table salt is roughly 3g per kg of body weight."

According to the MSDS: Borax: LD50 for rats taken orally (eating it) is 2.66 grams/kg


                                   Table salt: LD50 rat oral is 3.0 g/kg


LD50 is the amount required to kill half the tested group.  So this means that borax is slightly more toxic then table salt.  At least to rats.

Lol, I’m not going to argue, I just don’t think it’s a problem. I’m sure we could look stuff up,find numbers saying it’s killing native fish, and rant on and on.

I would suggest that the greater threat to native cutthroat isn't the borax in the roe, but those sharp pieces of metal buried in the roe that get lodged down their throats

Yes, and I use it in my vegetable garden for it's low toxicity.  Mixed with cornmeal and maple syrup, it makes great ant bait that is safe to use around my veggies (but not on them). Between that at the cups of beer for the slugs, my veggies nearly pest-free. It also makes a great ant bait to use around pets - many other commercial ant killers are toxic to cats and dogs.
