Interesting Letter from John Cummins re Illegal Fishing
« on: August 11, 2004, 12:35:34 PM »

I have just received an interesing news release from John Cummins re the illegal fishing and the current situation on the Fraser River.

I have sent the press release to Rodney to post here if he wishes.

May satisfy CJ with some of his concerns re evidence needed.

This is why letters I keep asking for are so important as the politicans that agree with our position know there is a number of us out there backing him when he brings these forward to the press' attention and in the House.

JOHN CUMMINS, M.P.
Delta-Richmond East

                  NEWS RELEASE

August 11, 2004

Fisheries Injustice Continues

DELTA-"Commercial fisherman in BC have a right to be angry yet again
with the Liberal government over the failed management of the Fraser
River Salmon fishery this year," said John Cummins, M.P., Delta-Richmond
East.

This season for commercial fishermen on the Fraser River concludes today
with fisherman having fished a total of 39 hours over 3 days including
the 2 hour opening today.

This compares with 222 hours of commercial fishing for the Sto:lo Indian
band from the Port Mann Bridge to Sawmill Creek in the Fraser Canyon and
48 hours for the Tsawwassen/Musqueam bands fishing at the mouth of the
river.

The Musqueam had a 14 hour fishery on August 8th in which the Tsawwassen
may not have participated.  Refer to the following table for native only
commercial fishing hours:

                                    30-July 4-Aug 6-Aug 8-Aug
9-Aug Total
Port Mann-Sawmill - Sto:lo. 72 96 24 30
222
Tsawwassen & Musqueam 24 24 48
Musqueam only                 14
14

These fisheries are only the tip of the iceberg. These bands have been
fishing in a bogus food, social and ceremonial fishery almost every
weekend since late March.  Fish are caught in quantities far in excess
of food needs and routinely sold.

The Department is aware of these illegal sales and because it continues
to provide these fishing opportunities, can rightly be considered to be
complicit in this illegal activity.

The mismanagement of the Fraser River fishery costs the provincial
economy tens of millions of dollars each year.  "It's high time Mr.
Campbell and Mr. Plant called their federal Liberal cousins to heel on
this matter," said John Cummins, M.P., Delta Richmond East.

Besides, he's going to be our next fisheries minister

Now that is a pile of codswallop if ever I read one. ::)

In fact John Cummings appears nowhere in the Conservative 'Shadow Cabinet' at all http://www.conservative.ca/english/shadowcabinet.asp

Because of his past antics and anti-Big Business statements while he was in the Reform Party he has been frozen out of any position of responsibility whatsoever-this is all old news.

What that means is that he's a backroom grunt who does what he's told when he's told. He's allowed to make only the most innocuous of statements and everything that comes out his mouth must first be cleared with his bosses-which is how politics works.

http://www.conservative.ca/english/..%5Cmedia%5Cnl%5Chearn.htm is the link to the Conservative 'Shadow Cabinet' Fisheries critic.

Your post SS does not address the fact Cummins' news release tells exactly what is and has been going on out on the river.

It has nothing to do with who is the fisheries critic now and why he was replaced as that happens in Government all the time as they change cabinet posts for all sorts of reasons.

The bottom line which is important the news release stated the facts even though you may not agree with them which is your choice which I respect but do not agree with.

I will not be getting into a debate with you on this but am just putting out the information I receive for all to read and decide what they want to believe. It is everyone choice in a Democratic society to do so.

Again can anyone help me here. what part of.... 'aboriginal food, social and ceremonial fishing' does selling fall under. Are the political powers afraid to add the term economical to this list, as Katzie FN chief Peter James has no problem stating in news print?

Quote
Katzie First Nation Chief Peter James doesn't link the two issues. For his band, the extra fishery is a much-needed economic boost. About 90 to 100 Katzie boats go out for the commercial openings.
"People have an opportunity to make some extra money and have some money to spend locally," he said.
Quote

Or would this then change court decisions, that there is indeed two separate commercial fisheriers based on racial destiction which displaces the Charter of Rights?

Hello....wake up politicians. Are we playing, 'you call it tomatoe and I'll call it tomato?   >:(
