Any report from up north? (Terrace/Kitimat)
« on: July 20, 2004, 12:30:57 PM »

Hi, i will be visiting Terrace in about 10 days. Anybody has recent reports from that area?

I did some fishing a while ago (actually about 7 years ago) in the Skeena and the Kitimat. Had a ball with the pinks in the Skeena, with a few sockeyes, and several chums in the Kitimat.

If i understands this year's regulations, these species are still open this year? The lures we used at that time were spin&glow, hoochies, and Croc pink spoon. Are these still the lures of choice, or any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance. I'll post a report when i'm back.

worst chinook return since 1995. The test fishery at Tyee has had 21 better years and 27 worse years of chinook returns. Sockeye and coho entering the river are also down as per the test fishery.

I recieved your PM, Onerka - and yes, the chinook run is down in numbers from the past 7 years, but the sockeye commerical openings are just about done, so the sockeye are showing in good numbers. As for the Kitimat, I haven't been over that way for a month, but the Douglas channel is seeing the regular runs of pinks and chums. The water is low and good visability on the mainstem Skeena.
The bars above the bridge are amazingly packed, whereas the bars below aren't crowded whenever I drive by there.

The Copper river is dirtier than the mainstem, with a nice bar at the conflux that I'm heading to right now to haul sand and try some Hotshots for a while.

Cheers,

Hey Splittail nice to hear from home!

When I used to fish the Copper they always closed the mouth as it is such a nice gravel bed... Have they opened it for many years now? I bet its hot!

I was at the ekstew (spelling sorry) the year before last and had great hookups of Coho ( on a 55 kit-a -mat)

Good luck.

Another quick update for you - the Skeena is being a bad girl again and rose and became dirty.  :-[   So I headed off to the Tseax yesterday, where I landed about 8 Dollys and a 12-15lb Spring, which i took pics and released.  Took a few Dollys home and cooked them up with fresh produce from the garden. The Tseax is so clean, that it was a real treat to fish!

There are NO bar fishermen below the bridge...they must have got disgusted and went home, with only 3 fly fishers above the bridge. Likewise, I was alone all day on the Tseax.
That Copper River gravel bar has been open for the last two years...and yes its a real nice conflux that can be easily waded. Steelhead fishing in late October & November there is quite nice.  There were more people fishing from the CN bridge in Terrace up to Copper River than anywhere else on the Lower Skeena.

I know this would fit more in the report section, but just to follow up on my initial message.

We got back from vacation to BC & Alberta last weekend. You guys got beautiful landscape in terms of mountains and different color shade of rivers and lakes.

About the fishing part now. Quantity was not there, but we managed to land 5 salmons. We fished the Skeena (Terrace) and the Kitimat on July 31st & August 1st. We got one sockeye and one pink in the Skeena. Both fell for a piece of chartreuse yarn. Both were the same length, but the pink was much more plump, and we estimate it's weight at about 5 lbs. We did lose a few more fish.

On the Kitimat, we landed 3 chums. All fell for Spin-N-Glo & hoochie. Largest one was 35.5 inches long, with mean looking teeths!

On a final note, good and bad one... When fishing on the Skeena, close to Ferry Island, fishermans are line up with about 15 to 20 feet space between them. The following happened twice to me. While I was out to retie my line (man, there's probably a ton of lead at the bottom of the river  ;)), new fisherman coming to the river asked me where I was standing in the river. If there was not enough room, these people would move upward or downstream. I appreciated the "classy" gesture.
On the not so positive side though, I met with a real "redneck" on the Kitimat... We got to a spot really early in the morning, and were the first one there. As we wore waders, we walked in and fished in knee deep water. Along came 3 guys in a pickup. They started fishing right beside us, from the bank. With the current, one of guys line is on my waders, and if I don't pull it away, the lure will snag in my boots. I pulled it away a couple of times, looking at him. He stares at me like he owns the river... Was not looking for confrontation, we just moved to another part of the river. I guess there's good and bad people everywhere!

Overall had a very nice trip.
