Great video Rod!

That was the exact setup I used to finally catch some fish a few weeks back.

It's odd, I feel sad for the much maligned Chum and now it's suffering due to over netting.

Its a very strong fighting fish, it's normally very plentiful, its easy to find, its easy for novices to catch because it is so obligingly aggressive to short floated jigs of the right colour and above all it is excellent table fare (if it has a white belly) and smokes up a treat (if the belly is less than white).

So, why so much under appreciation?

Anyhow great and informative video.  The only thing I would note is that IMHO Chum are not leader shy so a mainline of 17-20 lbs with 15 lbs mono leader will result in more abrasion resistance leader and less lost fish, particularly when they are thrashing around and you are trying to tail them (not a problem with a net).

When do the last chum typically enter the Vedder river?

When do the last chum typically enter the Vedder river?

I remember seeing a spawning pair in mid February and a moribund fish in mid March.  This was in the early 70's when there were far more chums in the Vedder than recent years.

The first fish was the brightest chum I have ever seen in a river

I'm always impressed how many of the cleanest chums I have caught and seen are later in season like mid-Nov. From other systems besides the C/V too.

Another tale from yesteryear - it used to be fairly common to catch silver bright chum - real silver bright - in late Dec and into January.  During the early years of the steelhead brood stock captures, a local angler tubed what he thought was a steelhead.  Hatchery staff picked it up and only realized the mistake when in was put into the condo for stewing.

When I first started steel heading on the Vedder back 35 yrs ago. In Dec there would be lots of Chums still around. Back in those days they were not fished for and considered a nuisance fish that got in the way of trying to catch a coho or steelhead.

Liked the overhead footage with the chum swiftly swimming away. Great shot. Nice to see Nina in vid again !!! Fresh air in nostrils & river & mt. views. Looked like she was enjoying herself. Your boy looks like a happy guy. Hope he likes eating fish. Merry CHRISTmas & best for 2019 to you(s) as well.  :)

Thanks for watching all!

The latest I've caught a nice silver chum salmon was in the first week of December.

Those fish in the video are nice, but we actually caught even more silver fish before and after that day.
