The Nanaimo RCMP is pleased to announce two adult males from Nanaimo have been arrested in connection with the theft of two boats in the Nanaimo area. Investigators apprehend the two males on August 22nd in the area of Shoreline Drive in Nanaimo, in the possession of two stolen boats; one recently taken from the Port Basin in Nanaimo and the other, from Mudge Island. Both males were arrested without incident then taken into police custody.

38-year-old David Robert MALCOLM and 40-year-old Ian Raymond SEWARD have been charged with two counts each of Possession of Stolen Property over $5000. The two were released from custody on August 23rd and are expected to make their first court appearance in Nanaimo Provincial court on September 4th.

While no additional charges are pending against the two, investigators believe they may have been involved in the recent rash of boat thefts in the Nanaimo area, which saw 13 boats stolen since May 14th. Additionally, since their arrests, there have been no further reported boat thefts in the Nanaimo area.

The majority of the boat thefts have occurred in the Nanaimo Port Authority Port Basin. In most cases, the boats targeted were not locked and if they were, the lock was easily defeated. Some basic tips are provided to ensure your boat does not fall into the hands of thieves:

•Invest in a heavy duty chain or lock for your boat and keep it secured at all times when not in use
•Remove all valuables and keep them out of sight
•Take pictures of your boat, motor and valuables to assist investigators • Record the HIN and make, model and serial number of the boat motor
•Frequently check on your boat for tampering and get to know your neighbors
•Report all suspicious activity immediately to the police
