Has anyone tried the type of wireless fishfinder that you tie to a fishing line and cast out from shore?

I once saw a guy at an urban lake cast one those fishfinder out. His line broke while casting and he lost it.

When shore fishing, 'fan cast' 180 degrees and you can get a sense of the bottom, structure and depth quickly.  Save your money.
