Underwater Drones For Recreational Fishing
« on: January 09, 2017, 08:30:10 AM »

I never thought fishing would come to this, I guess it will put flossing in the background if people start using them. :P Of course it would be expensive when they find a snag.

Looks super cool, as long as people don't use it for spying on fish before they start fishing. Just driving it around and checking out fishing spots/underwater terrain would be neat. Or sending it on a first-person underwater run down some rapids :D

A random bit that stood out to me, FWIW:

From the article:
"Unveiled at CES this week, the PowerRay is a submersible robot that uses sonar technology and ‘internal fish luring lights’ to detect and attract fish up to 30 meters under water."

From the regs:
"Use a light in any manner to attract fish, unless the light is submerged and attached to the fishing line within 1 m of the hook."

--Could be used to check nets to see if they are intercepting none target fish. Thus allowing netters to remove net before there is a major problem. .. rather than waiting to pull a net hrs later only to find a lot of by-catch.
--Research on fish behavior...how they feed
--As with any tool it is the operator that chooses to use it for good or evil.

Hopefully the fisheries will catch up with the times and like the hunting, ban the use of these fuckers.

Hey how’d you sneak that in? I agree with your statement.

What I see is size and cost being a deterrent to using this technology.
Even if that isn't overcome people will still find a way to use it for nefarious uses.

It could be a great tool for research.

Right now cost may be an issue, but like any technology with time the cost goes down.
We shouldn't be using these tools for fishing. It's not fishing anymore.
