Trolling for Lakers - Canim Lake
« on: May 19, 2016, 05:17:19 PM »

Heading up to Canim Lake near 100 Mile House in a few weeks. I'll be down rigging for Lakers mainly. I've caught them previously on Shuswap down rigging with spoons (without flashers) as well as using small flashers with trout baitrix lures in teaser heads.  I'm just curious if you guys have any suggestions for other lures to try that you've also had success with??  Also, anyone else fish Canim?

Have only fished for them once and I used large flatfish behind the leadcore and long leader.
This was on a lake not too far from Canim.
Cant even remember the colours but im pretty sure one was a blue and silver.
Now that I have downriggers I would use them.
Lakers aren't allways as deep as one would think though.
When you going up Scott? Will be at Sheridan 20-25th.

We'll be up there first weekend of June for a boys (mainly father-son) trip.  I do have a finder on the boat and I found on Shuswap the finder worked well for us in finding the depth they were at and getting hook ups.

Good point on them not always being deep.  But of your course your electronics will show you where they are.

Keep in mind, some that might be hanging out down deep won't necessarily bite.  And there could be another batch of them actively feeding in shallower water and patrolling the drop off in front of creek mouths.  (we caught a few in 10lb range at Canim back in the day on flatfish slow trolled with just a couple of split shot).

Good luck,  awesome lake.

Chrome silver horde plug at 60 feet on the downrigger is my go to lure for Canim. My biggest is 17 lb out of there.

spent a week there a few years ago; guy that owned the cabin suggested slow troll with lightly weighted flies in the top 20'.  Used whatever flies he left behind (all different) - my son used a bunch he picked out at a dollar store and crappy tire - most worked well; one of my son's favorites that produced well was a red worm pattern (dollar store!!  wasn't as nice as this one, but you get the idea this way).  We're not fly guys, they were dragged from my ultralight and his spiderman rod with a couple of split shots a couple feet up).  Brought in a few a day; largest was around 6-7 lbs (don't ask who caught the biggest one - still a proud moment, yet sore spot for me LOL).
