Ocean/beach flies?
« on: May 04, 2016, 06:10:28 PM »

Hi,

What kind of flies might be useful fishing at Ambleside?

Will a sinking versatip work, or is a full sink line needed?

Thanks...

this might help get you started:

google crab larve fly

http://oregonflyfishingblog.com/2011/07/25/reflections-and-revelations-from-the-oregon-coast/

try a Capilano Bugger:

Capilano Bugger
Hook: 6-12 3xl
Tail: olive or grizzly olive sparse about ½ body length
Hackle: grizzly not too long
Body: small olive, peacock or emerald green crystal chenille or plain with a flashy rib
Head: gold or silver bead 1/8inch or 5/32

or here's a general pattern:

A pattern, or rather a series of patterns I use locally (Lower mainland, B.C.) all centre around the use of polar bear under hair. I'll wrap the hook shank in holographic silver tinsel or glo pearl and do a sparse wing of polar bear. Some times I ad a hint of colour just under the wing. Washed out pink, peach and chartreuse are faves. The head is black thread. Fished on a clear floater on a long leader and a dead slow retrieve. I keep the fly small, from size 8 to 14.

With the versitip I only use the slow sink tip (the clear) slime line.  The water out there is pretty clear and not that deep unless you are fishing off the muscle bank and even then toward the south end it's shallow.   I just use regular coho river flies, but then again I have not caught that many... :[

no sink tip just a long leader and a weighted fly.  euphausiids and little slim baitfish things wrapped with hackle.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but do any of you guys fish from a float tube off Ambleside? Never fished there before ..

I wouldn't recommend using a float tube out there. I feel safe in my kayak but I have seen a pontoon boat flipped by the big waves caused by the freighters out there. For beach flies I usually use clouser patterns tied nice and sparse for coho.

There are guys in float tubes out there during salmon season, but they may be relying on lots of boats around in case they get into trouble.
Stay away from the rip near the bell buoy.

It's Ralf Kroning's pattern. He's probably the most well known fly angler on the north shore beaches I believe he means Polar Bear underfur - not the long stiff guard hairs.

Not unless you have legs like a running back. ;)

Seriously though, probably not a great idea. The tides can scream out there, and then you have to factor in potential wave action from the passing boats as Colin says.
