Rainshadow blanks
« on: December 13, 2015, 03:45:04 PM »

Hi guys,

Thinking of getting a custom Rod built by valley custom rods and was wondering if anybody had any experience with the Rainshadow blanks?

Thanks!

I have built up 20 or so Rainshadow blanks over the years; when I gear fish (which isn’t often nowadays) I use a Rainshadow 1263 built for a levelwind.  Love it.   This Christmas I have built up 2 Rainshadow flyrods for my grandsons.  Imo, as a rod builder and an angler, these are good value for the money sticks.  I have had one warranty issue over the years and Mark, formally of Valley Custom Rods was there all the way for me.  I have no doubt Chad Hammond will offer this same great service.
They aren’t quite Sage quality, but they are about the third of the price ;)

The blank I wanna get is the RX-7 2 piece salmon/steelhead. It's an 11 footer 10-20 lb rating

The RX7 blank is nice for a centerpin application. It is more moderate action and flexes deep into the handle, making for smooth casting. For Levelwind I prefer the XST family, specifically XST1263. It is faster action, very light and responsive. My favorite float rod for certain.

............ gets the job done.sensitive with lots of backbone for hot-fish/heavy water..                                                                                .....a bit heavy in the hand(mostly due to the length) but can be countered with periods of two handed grip....
