« on: April 30, 2015, 09:36:31 AM »

Casting trouble:

Im fishing 12'6" spey
Skagit 500 grain 24'
10' T10 sink tip
Doing double spey
River right
Anchor is about
1 1/2 rod length away
After the sweep&lift&fire
My sink tip makes a "snap-whipping" sound..
My line doesn't shoot as far

A little help would be appreciated
Thanks

What's the rod a #7 or #6? Sometimes a heavier head will help you feel the rod load and help you control your cast.

The noise probably means you are applying too much power and moving the rod too fast. Slow it down and let it work through it's tapers that way it does the work for you!

It always amazes me just how little energy is needed to load and cast my DH rods. My first cast or 3 are always overpowered.

Slow your forward cast and ease off on the power. The sink tip is your anchor, let it do it's job.

Try slowing down the sweep and power stroke. Allow the rod to load and try and keep the rod loaded through the sweep/forward cast. Also, try casting with about 60% power. If the rod is loaded properly you will bomb the cast out there even with 60% power.

Yup as everyone has said slow down, you're putting to much power into your cast.

I may be able to get together after the long weekend if you'd like some "on the water" help. I'm no master of the cast but I have taught a few people. I actually find it easier to explain how it all works than to do it myself some days LoL

Like what the other guys said     I had the same problem  your casting too fast    go slow    whatever you think is slow enough  take that and go slower     I natural cast fast  and it takes alot to remember  SLOW DOWN  this is not one hand casting
