If I use 30 lb power pro, the real mono equivalent is slightly greater in diameter than the 12lb max rating for the reel.
I want to also increase the capacity of the spool, so backing with mono is also a problem because it will reduce the lineage. I was thinking about using 20lb instead as my leader will never be more than 12lbs.

To prevent the braid from slipping on the spool and the braid from digging into the spool, what if I use one wrap on heavy duty copper pipe tape? This is the tape used to prevent electrolysis between metals in plumbing clamps. I have heard that you can use electrical tape, but that will ooze a sticky mess and is not very thick. The pipe tape is fairly thick, strong, with very little adhesive.

Technically I guess you could say I use braid all the time.  Except 90-100ft of it are coated with either PVC or polyurethane and the strongest stuff is dacron  ;D

Curious?

What color braid do you use?

Suffix 832, low-vis green.
