Spoon weight, when to increase weight
« on: October 31, 2014, 10:02:26 PM »

I have have some R&B spoons in 2/5oz and 2/3oz.  So far I had been using 2/5 most of the time.  I am wondering at what situation would warrant using the heavier 2/3oz?  Faster or deeper water?
Thanks for your inputs.

Spoon size is determined by water speed, not depth. If it's deep but still slow (a typical Thompson run for example), I use a 2/5 spoon, but cast farther up river to give it time to sink before letting it swing out. I generally like to try and achieve a couple taps on bottom before going into my swing.

I will up to a 2/3 spoon if I feel my thump is too fast or I can feel my spoon riding up due to current speed. Both of those variables take time on the water to figure out. The riding up is generally easy to feel, the thumping is more of a practice thing that takes time to figure out.
