Who's been spooled by a spring on the Fraser?
« on: June 27, 2004, 09:08:15 PM »

I have never hooked a spring on the Fraser so I can say that I have never had the pleasure of being spooled.

If you do not have a boat, how often does it happen?  How fast does it happen?  Where does the line break, at the reel or at the leader?  Can you do anything to prevent it?  Any other comments?

I got spooled by a chum on the Harrison using 8 lb test on a spinning reel. I reckon it was tail hooked and just turned into the current, I lost 330 yds of line in about 45 seconds !!!

I got out the levelwind after that, because I was running short of line, and couldn't spool up the spinning reel again. I didn't catch anything else that day !!!

i got spooled by a large catfish in the States. had my heavy duty spinning reel loaded up with 320 yards of 30LB test braid, a 2oz oval weight, a #1/0 circle hook and a big chunk of flyblown, maggot ridden meat for bait. at 3 in the morning the clicker started clacking, and by i picked up the rod,  that cat took off down the swamp, took every last bit of line except for the 20 yards of yellow tuffline plus i had on the base of the spool. the spool was hot from the disc drag,. took me about an hour to reel that lunker in. 28 lbs, with 13 "long barbs' coming off its face. best BBQ we ever had.
