Stamp River Steelhead and Cowichan River Trout Fishing
« on: November 10, 2013, 10:36:11 AM »

Vancouver Island Steelheading and Trout fishing is in full swing.

The Stamp river Steelheading is underway, with lots of fall and summer steelhead showing up in the upper river. November and December typically provide the best Steelheading in terms of numbers of fish, on the Stamp.  The river is low at the moment which is slowing the normally phenomenal fishing.  However, there is plenty of rain in the forecast which will bring river levels up.  This fishery is mainly a gear fishery, but we do well with indicators and eggs patterns when fly fishing. The Cowichan river has fantastic fly fishing for trout at the moment.  With the salmon spawning all throughout the river, the trout are actively feeding on the salmon eggs giving us an unbelievable trout fishery, most days we are averaging over 60 trout landed each day on the swing using mainly egg or minnow patterns. The Cowichan river has Rainbow, Brown and Cutthroat trout with the major abundance being rainbows and browns.  The rainbows getting up to 20 inches and the Brown trout as large as 8-10lbs. The Coho have been opened in the lower river for retention and there are hundreds of chrome Coho moving through the river at the moment. The Cowichan river has one of the latest runs of Coho on the island.  Follow my facebook page for daily updates (www.facebook.com/ramblingfisherman).
