The gear fisherman across the river looked pretty jealous and aggravated watching me fight this beauty, and began switching his bait to colorado, to worm, to roe, to yarn, etc EVERY cast afterwards. hahaha

my feelings aren't hurt. i just don't think their is need for it. he is essentially laughing at a fisherman using different tactics because he hooked a fish when we all know it goes both ways, but this is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt

Fair enough and thank you for the clarification. I took it more as a jab at the Vedder River mindset than the gear being used by the anglers in question. You are dead on correct it goes both ways, more to the favour of gear guys overall.

Ssypark is just excited, I don't think his comment is mean-spirited. Most of us have been in that situation. He's not making fun of the gear fishermen, but he just finds it funny that he actually caught one on the fly, which is a rather difficult accomplishment for many, while the angler using conventional gear, which has a much bigger chance to get them, couldn't connect with a fish.

Yes sorry guys. I wasn't bashing on other styles of fishing and I have a deep appreciation for them all. I personally just found it amusing that the frowning fisherman across the river thought constantly changing his bait every cast would increase his chances. I would feel the same if it was a fly fisherman instead, constantly switching his fly after each cast. I've had a lot of success on the gear rod and clearly see its advantages when it comes to fishing the Vedder. Catching a steelhead on the fly is just a personal goal of mine and like Rodney mentioned, my excitement may have come off as a negative comment and also may not have been neccessary and i apologize again for that.

Tight lines everyone and good luck out there.

Here is some more fishporn to keep this thread going.

Wow ! someone has sure been cleaning up on hatchery fish  - EDIT - where did all yours pics go Bigfisher !!

Im not sure why some guys get so pissy over fly to gear comments. I bet 99% of us fish both at certain times of the year. I think what he was trying to say is he thought it funny that the gear guy started changing presentations after every drift after he got his on the fly. I see lots of guys do things like this whether im gear fishing or fly fishing and i hit fish nearby, it also makes me chuckle a little. what really makes me laugh is when they ask what im using and its exactly the same thing they are, the look of confusion is priceless  ;) when this happens i will take a few mins to either explain where the fish are lying or my exact technique to get me in the zone and help them out (usually its both)

HOOK - likes seeing others catch fish --------------- sometimes gets a little bitter during steely dry spells though

I agree hook I love seeing other people catch fish. I never hold back secrets like what I am using or where I have had success but some people do. I come from the car (mustang)world where everyone is eager to help and share ideas where as fishing is very different. Most are very secretive on what they use and where they use it. Just want to see everyone get along and enjoy what we all love. Tight lines.

They are R&B Lure Company.  Proving to be quite deadly so far.  They'll be available locally in early March.

What size do you find most useful for Vedder? 2/5 or 2/3?
As someone who is used to 1/2 oz spoons, I do carry them both, but most of the time I end up using 1/2 oz for some reason.

It all depends on the flow and style of spoon.   With these oval style spoons and the recent water conditions, I find the 2/5 more versatile.  You can work it in almost all water whereas with the 2/3 is tough to produce the desired action in slow water.
