Stamp River Creel Volunteers
« on: July 08, 2012, 03:01:20 PM »

The Port Alberni Sport Fishing Advisory Council (SFAC) successfully applied for an Experimental Sockeye Fishery which will occur in the area of the Park at the bottom of Service Road (off Hector Road) July 14 through 22. An announcement to this effect will be posted by DFO shortly, and I will provide the link to that here once it is out.

In order for the Experimental Fishery to proceed, a handful of Volunteer Creel Census Personnel are required to monitor the fishery throughout the opening. To facilitate this, the SFAC is requesting Volunteers from within the Angling Community to fill these positions.

Should the fishery prove to be successful, we can likely look forward to more openings over a wider area for sockeye in the future. Creel Census Personnel will aid greatly in securing this option for the future.

Anyone who may be interested, please respond to this Email: bgoodwin@shaw.ca

Cheers,

Good work! This type of co-management arrangement is hopefully the way of the future, given the increasing need to assess fisheries and stock strength, and the ever-declining ability for DFO to fund this work internally. Organized sport fishing groups need to take a leadership role in this type of work.

Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0594-RECREATIONAL - Salmon - Region 1 - Somass River - Limited Sockeye Opening

The Department has consulted with the Port Alberni Sport Fishing Advisory Committee and Somass Roundtable regarding a limited recreational sockeye
fishery in a small portion of the Somass River.

A limited fishery opportunity is supported by local First Nations (the Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations) and the commercial fishing sector (Area B Seine, Area D Gillnet). The objective of this trial fishery is to determine the feasibility of future small-scale recreational fisheries on Somass sockeye in the non-tidal (freshwater) portions of the Somass River in years of high abundance.

Effective 06:00 hours July 14 to 21:59 hours July 22, 2012 the daily limit of sockeye salmon is two (2) in a portion of the Somass River located
approximately 350 meters upstream and 50 meters downstream of the boat launch at Somass Park.

Variation Order Numbers: 2012-294 and 2012-295.
