Cleaning out your smoker
« on: May 11, 2012, 12:16:22 PM »

Does anyone get in there with bleach and clean their smokers out spotless. I find the black grime really difficult to get off.
I keep all the racks and bowls and whatnot clean, but I don't clean the black off the sides. It doesn't seem to make a difference to the taste of the food I'm smoking.....but I've only had my current smoker for a few years.

Any thoughts??

I don't clean mine at all. Sure it's not very nice to look at, but when it comes to smoking stuff the walls are coated in the scent already, so as the chips burn the smoke sticks directly to the meat rather than forming a lining on the walls first

I thought that all new smokers need to be seasoned first before they should be used so that the food does not taste like metal.  Therefore I don't clean the inside of my Bradley.  I just wipe the outside and the frame around the door to keep it from sticking.  If any juices get onto the floor of the smoker, I will wipe that with a wet cloth or paper towel.

Twice a year I'll give it a good scrub with hot water and soap and then take the garden hose to it.  I think no matter how hard you scrub though you won't get rid of the black.

I spoke to the Bradley people at the outdoor show and they advised that the inside of the smoker need not be cleaned.

Just give it a good scrub with soap and water after every use

I simply wipe down the moisture after every use and let it fully dry out.
