ORIENTAL STYLE FORTUNE COOKIES
« on: October 11, 2011, 07:04:22 AM »

Good Morning:
Do any of you gentlemen ever make fortune cookies. My grandchildren truly love to chew on them. Does anyone have a receipe that they would be willing to share with me. I would also need the method needed to prepare and bake.

Regards.

I was in San Francisco recently, and saw one of the original fortune cookie makers/factories in action (they actually are a California invention).  The cookies were made from a batter that was much more like pancake batter than cookie dough, and it was poured on small (~3" diameter) cast iron pans.  If you can find a recipe for the batter, I'd bet that you could make them in a cast iron pan.  When they are cooked, they are peeled off of the pan and the fortune is folded up in them while they are still soft and warm.

If you find a recipe, post the link. When I was a little kid, my mom used to make them for our school class parties but she'd put riddles and jokes in them. I remember her spending hours on a typewriter making the paper slips and hours in the kitchen with her cast iron fry pan making the cookies. They were a big hit in class.
