Crayfish traps in bait-ban rivers?

Hi there. Looking at throwing a crayfish trap into a B.C. river that's flyfishing only, and has a bait ban.

Would that bait ban apply to these traps, as well, or is that only relevant to fishing with a rod/line?

I'm interested in the answer so I'll check with someone in BC Fisheries headquarters and post their response here. Just guessing, I don't think the bait ban would apply to crayfish trapping. You have to release any fish that are caught in the trap anyway and it probably doesn't harm them.

Ok, the gist of what I got from Fisheries HQ is that the bait ban applies to angling for finfish. Crayfish are crustaceans and thus not included in the legal definition of finfish so they can be targeted using baited traps. Be sure to carefully handle and release any finfish inadvertently trapped.

Crayfish make some good eating! We used to use rotten chicken parts as bait...worked great.....good luck!
