Buntzen Lake, May 22nd 2011
« on: May 22, 2011, 11:43:24 AM »

So seeing as its a holiday, my dad and I fished buntzen lake. Great day to be out.

We both limited out on kokanee (all between 10 and 13 inches) and released another 5  :o (all within 2 hrs), trolling the southern third of the lake just to the east of those two islands with wedding rings and fordfenders + worms. One of the best combos invented imho. We were fishing quiet shallow and at a slow speed. Cold water/rain/wind didn't seem to deter those fish.

Anyways, just thought I'd let you know that buntzen is fishing really well atm. =D
enjoy the weekend.

there are stocked rainbows and stocked kokanees (stocked ages ago and reproduced), wild cutthroat, dolly varden, northern pike minnows, and some other smaller varieties of fish. all great fun to catch. the kokanee fishing is best in the early spring then sorta dies off once the weather warms =D

Any photos of the kokanee?

As far as I am aware of, there have never been stocked kokanee in Buntzen Lake, the stocking data dated back to 1910 also agrees with me.

http://a100.gov.bc.ca/pub/fidq/stockedSpeciesSelect.do (type in Buntzen Lake under "*Gazetted Name/Alias")

are they? i have hiked all around that area and seen the orriginal stream that once flowed from buntzen lake. i find it hard to believe that sockeye ever migrated up that. not doubting your word, just saying...

sorry, I don't own a camera atm. Otherwise i would have taken some pics before cleaning them.
As for the stocking, I know BC hydro use to raise and release fish into buntzen lake (there use to be a hatchery in the lake in that south bay). Maybe thats why its not appearing on the record  ??? I believe (but could be totally wrong) that that stocking would probably be independent of the regular fisheries stocking.

Any fish released into a public watershed would be recorded into the provincial database, regardless which agency carried out the release.

Me too, I have two publications witch both list Kokanee as species present in the lake, one called
"Guide to Freshwater Fishing" put out by the Ministry of Environment years ago, and another by Mussio Ventures "Fishing BC" Lower Mainland   go figure

I have caught Kokanee in Buntzen. Just  a few  over the years, never more than 1 at a time.I always thought they may have been mixed in with stocked bows by acc.

Good report and thanks for sharing. I've caught a few kokanee out of Buntzen but none of them were over 10 inches, nice job on the big ones!

If they are indeed coming down the tube from another Lake (Coquitlam) I would think that this could become a bit of an issue!
