Not pinching barbs properly
« on: March 24, 2011, 11:52:57 AM »

Here is my collection of stuff found in about 1/2 hour in 1 pool at Cap Canyon.

Observations

19 Pinched barbs
9 Barbed hooks
6 Not pinched properly (ie I can snag my sweater on them)

And this beast of a lure does have a pinched barb  :D

It also has a rattle and splitshot as well as additional holes for more rattles and shot.

Acouple of those not properly pinched ones look like the barb mave have busted off when trying to pinch. I have this happen alot on fly hooks it seems because of the tiny barb i guess.

DFO/CO use the sweater test so technically they could fine you because it would snag. They suggest actually filing all your barbs off so as not to have an issue. I just buy barbless hooks whenever i can (alot of fly hooks dont offer barbless)

some people will never learn  >:(
for gear fishing i just buy my hooks barbless so i dont snap a barb crimping it, leaving a tiny barb on it.
flies tho i always crimp them at home after i finish tying it then file it if i have to.
lol that one beast hook thing looks like it could catch a whale  ;D

This wasn't at Cable Pool.  This wasn't a rant.  This has zero to do with BBing.

It was an observation and a reminder to pinch barbs properly.

My point was to take a second look after you pinch your barb to ensure it actually pinched.   ;)  Pretty straightforward...yes...no?   ???

Maybe there is not enough enforcement but I have personally had my hooks checked by undercover COs at Capilano

that sweater test is bogus and will not stand in court just like the old cotton ball test...i have spoken with DFO and i was informed that proper attempts must be met, to pinch barbed hooks as specified in the Regulations under the Ocean's and Fisheries act, but no where do they suggest or insist on filing down crimped barbs to prevent prosecution...apparently officers may not represent the agency in a manner which may sway or misguide the public beyond what is written under the act, regardless of good intent...unless specified as a personal opinion, an officer may be reprimanded for misconduct.

so in Lamen's term if you buy a lure at Fred's on the day that you go fishing and then proceed to tightly pinch the barb on the hook... a fisheries officer can't go to you and say..."you didn't file the barb down, therefore i'm issuing you a ticket because a strand of wool pulled from the sweater"... that's going to the extreme when the regs have been followed to a tee...that's unfair and unconstitutional.

if they want to change the regs all they have to do is specify the use of a barbless hook by design to eliminate any discrepancy.

only reason i file mine is to get it a bit sharper and at the same time removing the tiny bit of barb to make it all smooth and sharper.

I personally try to get the barb to snap off whenever i can on fly hooks because that little bump of a squared edge can give you the tinyest extra second to set the hook on a fish  ;)

If you attempt the pinch the barb and its not the greatest you wont recieve a fine. I have had mine checked before and they were not pinched the best because some hook brands dont pinch as nicely as others (Eagle Claw comes to mind)

Hey the new freshwater synopsis makes this VERY CLEAR.

Quote
Points to remember when salmon fishing
in freshwater
Gear
• Single barbless hooks are required for all salmon fishing. If you are
pinching a barbed hook, crimp the barb flat against the shaft, such that
any cloth material

it's good they updated the requirements, but still lacking. what they should have written was....

*Single barbless hooks are required for all salmonid fishing. If you are pinching a barbed hook, crimp the barb flat against the shaft, such that any cloth material dragged across or poked through, the crimped barb does not catch or snag on it...any barbs that break should be filed down as such to achieve the required specification.

hey you have to admit, being specific about the wording will eliminate any discrepancy...why not just write down no barb? period...you don't think economics has anything to do with it?
