My MRS asked me to go catch some herring.
I guess she must have seen some new recipes on the Food Channel.
With all the money I have been spending on my salmon and steelhead tackle lately, I am going to have to make some effort on this new homework if I want a smooth start to my steelhead season.

Last time I went herring fishing was when I was like eleven and out of BC.
I have no idea where to start here in lower mainland.

I did read Rodney's Lower Mainland Fishing Report section that Richmond at hight tide might be good.
However, I live in the North Shore of Vancouver and would prefer to go somewhere closer to home if any good locations are available.
I don't have a boat so it will have to be pier or shore casting using a herring jig.

Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

My son catches them like crazy off the dock at belcarra, he uses a silvery minnow pattern fly jigged up and down with a couple splitshot a foot above.

If you see a guy casting a herring jig from a pier with a 9 1/2 feet salmon rod (shortest rod I have!), its probably me. LOL

Now, I just have to work up the motivation to go out and catch some.
For steelhead or salmon, somehow I can alway squeeze a few hours out any day of the week, but for this homework, I think it is going to take a while.
I guess the excuse to the MRS is going to have to be the tide table and position of the moon. LOL

100 % sure they were herring, caught in late winter, we think they were in there spawning.I froze some of them and used them for salmon and lingcod mooching in the summer.

Lots of herring around.  Try and take a Sabeki rig and tie it to the end of a sinking or sink tip fly line.  You can catch lots this way and it is much more fun than fishing with gear for the little guys.

I have caught many herring this way in the winters but have no idea what to do with them beyond using them for bait.  Anyone have any interesting Herring recipes?  I hear they are very good to eat but never got around to trying them..........

Some people love it and some just can't stand the fishy taste or smell.

Mostly it can be grilled either European style after marinating in olive oil, chopped onions, chili, salt, pepper, dill, etc.
or can be grilled Japanese style and served with soy souce and wasabe.
If you grill it just make sure you use an outdoor BBQ as broiling in the kitchen oven will really stink up the house for many hours.

There are many recipes if you google grilled herring.

If cooked properly, it is surprisingly tasty and nutritious food.
Lots of Omega-3 to boot.

Naw- it's got to be slack salted, filleted  and put in a pickle jar with peppercorns and vinegar.

Yeah.... pickled herring is good, especially Scandinavian style... However too much work for me filleting all those liittle fish. LOL
If you want to put the time in, it is good stuff.

Where can I buy a herring jig and has anyone been out for them lately ?
