What do you guys prefer for steelhead? Roe chunks or roe bags (spawn sacks)?

They both work. Roe bags is far less messier.

first time i ever used roe for steelhead was on sunday. lets say it worked just fine for me as i got my first of the year BONK !!  

oh and i just use chunks cause i dont have the patience or time for bags

first time i ever caught a steelhead i used both. A chunk in the bait loop and a bag hanging of the hook. 14lbs doe! .

I know some people that use something called the "Cluster F***"
A pink worm, with roe in the bait loop and a prawn dangling off the bottom of the hook.

As far as what I prefer Im a chunk roe guy.
Never got into the roe bags and now only confident in the chunks (and confidence in what you use is huge).

Roe bags here or I will string a Jensen egg above the hook and rig a prawn up on the hook/bait loop. I call it a pregnant prawn

i normally use bentrod jig with jensen egg/ prawn
but will try roe bags next on he river

My friend Sonny uses a pink worm and 2 jensen eggs in what we call the "Cock and Balls" setup. It looks hilarious but it's deadly.

I agree they both work but I have had greater success with chunks.

Prefer chunks myself.  If my frozen chunks have become freezer burned and dry, should I toss it in the garbage in the garbage or use it.  Is burned roe better than no roe.  Sorry to derail the thread guys..

I depends how cold the weather is, I will tie up water hard eggs in sacks because they last alot longer and saves my fingers if it is cold, from changing the bait every 4-10 cast..  Waterhard eggs will last a good 20 mins.


But I like the way good old roe chunks milk, and mostly fish chunks..Also because i am to lazy to tie up sacks all the time, or forget.

Daumzilla - the roe i was using the day i got my fish is a batch im using up first because it got more dried out and is kind of tough rather then pliable and soft. The fish arent to picky as long as it still smells good and milks well
