I need a lesson on installing braided loops on my fly line. Can anyone walk me through the process?

take the loops with you fly line into your local fly shop and have them SHOW you how its done. following explanation isnt a perfect science but being shown how to do it right so it stays really strong will save you frustration....trust me

Agreed, then if something goes wrong you can take it back and have it fixed

Or just use a perfect loop instead. I haven't had to re-do a single one of these yet.

No way that thing will pop off, and I have had a couple of the braided loops just come off when fighting a big snag...

you can also use other loop knots like the single & double surgeons knots I use these instead of the perfection loop just because they are faster to tie. I still recommend getting your local shop to do the braided loops because they will do more then just put it on and heat shrink it. There is other things you can do to make it tougher and they will know what works best. 


I dont bother with braided loops because i have had them come right off while fighting fish

I use 30 lb mono, a speed (nail-less) nail knot and a perfection loop to put loops on the end of my fly-line or tips.

I use braided loops on the back end of my home made T8+14 sink tips and perfection looped 30lb mono on the front end.

To install braid loops all I do is:

1) slip the braided loop onto the end of the line
2) use a 8lb mono nail knot at the front and rear ends of the braid loop for extra security
3) trim the excess mesh material from the back end of the rear nail knot
4) cover both nail knots with aqua seal or head cement

Never had one fail.

Pat AV:  How long do you make your T-8 and T-14 sink tips?  I use an 8 wt and presently use 3 or 6 foot lengths of T-14 depending on current and depth on the Vedder.

I make t8+t14 tips in 3 foot intervals from 3-18 feet (3,6,9,12,15,18ft) that way you are covered for most situations.

The longer tips are very tough to cast with a single handed rod though.

I usually heat seal the braid before doing the chinese finger puzzle connection - put a thick needle into the braid and heat the needle with a lighter till the braid at the end becomes transparent of the loose ends crinkle. Let cool a minute and remove braid.
