What did I catch at Garry Point today?

it's called a sand lance or 'sand eel' (not a true eel).

Thanks, I guess this is a salt water fish that just happens to be in garry point right now because it's extra salty?
My friend caught a small Tom Cod as well.

Nice. Were you in the group of three who were bait fishing by the Fishermen Memorial today?

Sandlance was my first guess, but I was looking through info as I was not totally sure. It's not unusual to find saltwater species at Garry Point, especially in the colder months. :)

Were you fishing for bull trout today?

Btw, your site has been very very helpful, we're novices at fishing and through this forum and information we had a great time fishing for pinks this summer. ( even though we lost tons of spoons ).

I was just thinking about tomcod when I watched you guys bait fishing. :) Usually by this time of the year there are quite a few around, it hasn't been that way for many years now. I was indeed fishing for bull trout, or whatever that is big and hungry. No luck except one giant bullhead, still slightly too early I think as I have tried it four times in the last week for them.

Interesting catch. That is the fun of fishing salt water - never know for sure what is at the end of the line.
By the way, it is interesting too for a Tom Cod to show up again. That thing disappeared from tidal Fraser many years ago. It seems a total habitat shift to some other river systems. Nice to see a come back if it is truely a Pacific Tom Cod.

Thanks for the pic but it does not look like Pacific Tom Cod which is more pinkish/silver in the body without colour spots. This fish looks like a kelt greenling or a small bullhead.

caught that kind of tomcod just off rivers inlet about 5 years ago. they were attacking the herring jigs we were using. nice sweet flaky white meat. no that is not a kelp greenling or a bullhead. caught a gray cod as well around 7 pounds as well on some buzzbombs. really good deep fried in batter.
