register used boat

hi! guys.
i just paid deposit for a boat.
the boat has some complicated problem.

the boat still registered under previous owner's name.
current owner has "bill of sale" from previous owner and original register paper(under previous owner's name).

heres my Qs.
1. will it have any possible problems when i register the boat?
2. do i have to register the boat? some people dont register their boat.
3. when i regisier the boat do i need to pay any taxes?

Size of your boat?  Horse power?  Value?

1. Yes you would.  The transfer paper is to the 2nd owner from 1st owner.
2. If the boat is more than replacement insurance cost you would want to register it.
3. Registration of ownership will cost about $180 at an insurance company.

Yes you have to pay taxes. That's why lots of people don't do it. If you are never bringing the boat down to the US then I wouldn't bother.

I bought a boat 3 or 4 years ago. I have not registered it yet in my name because I didn't get the previous owner to sign the back of the papers. I've just recently sent the paperwork back to the previous owner to get them signed. I got hit with the taxes on both the boat and trailer when I processed the change of ownership for the trailer and got the insurance for it.

I think you're better off registering the boat. Enforcement on the correct registration is becoming more and more common. I saw checks at both Alouette and Pitt lakes last year where RCMP was checking for proper registration and possession of the paperwork to support it.

In the past there was no law to have the registration in the boat.

has this changed?

my boat was bought new in '78, and I can't find paperwork.

thanks for the very helpful infos.
i registered my boat today.
it takes little more time to clear the title matter, but, have no problem.
i paid pst, fees, and insurance for the trailer but no taxes or fees for the boat.

Hi Glycine,

I registered my boat a few years ago so things may have changed.   As far as I remember:
         
                  1) Any boat that has an engine 10 hp or larger has to be registered (explains why they
                      make 9.9 hp motors...max. hp without boat registration)

                  2) Boat had to be registered with Transport Canada (there use to be a Downtown Vancouver office)

                  3) The boat registration number has to be displayed on the bow

                  4) On the form you have to state the value of the boat...then you will be taxed on the boat
                      value

                  5) If your boat does not have the registration number displayed on the bow, you could be fined 
 
You may want to check with your local Transport Canada office.
