KAMLOOPS - The first casualties of what fisheries officials fear could be a massive fish kill are beginning to turn up. Les Jantz, the acting chief of resource management for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, said Wednesday dead sockeye have been seen in increasing numbers by anglers on the Thompson River.
Managers feared the run would suffer significant pre-spawning mortality, similar to past ruturns of late-season sockeye.
For some unknown reasons, large portions of the late season soceye runs have displayed the tendency to enter freshwater early. Once in the rivers they linger instead of travelling swiftly through, making them more susceptible to disease, higher water temperatures and to a parasite that destroys their kidneys.
Scientists noticed the trend several years ago and remain at a loss to explain the strange behavior.
