From a recent DFO email:

Quote
Fraser River Chum

Recreational fisheries for chum are currently open at 4 per day in the tidal portion of the river and 2 per day in the open portion of the non-tidal Fraser.

Fraser River chum run size is calculated on or around October 15 using catch per unit effort (CPUE) information from the Albion test fishery and comparing that information from historical data which shows relationships between CPUE and run size.  Once this run size is calculated, the following decision table is used to determine how many chum will be harvested and by whom.

Run size <800 000, the harvest plan calls for a limited harvest of less than 10% which means limited FSC fisheries and restricted recreational fisheries.

Run size  between 800-916 000, the harvest plan calls for a catch not to exceed 81 000 which is largely taken in FSC fisheries with some recreational tributary openings.

Run size  between 916 000-1 050 000, the harvest plan calls for a commercial catch not to exceed 10%.  So full FSC, full recreational and commercial catch from 35 000 to 105 000 (dependent on run size).

Run size in excess of 1 050 000, the harvest plan calls for commercial catch not to exeed 15%.

Run sizes have exceeded 1 050 000 for the last four years.
