I was planning to head to some bars near agassiz to try some sockeye fishing this weekend. However, from rodney's post on FN fisheries ...the economic opening will be throughout the weekend. I don't have idea of whether i will have any chance hooking any fish..while FNs are using drift nets. this will be my first time salmon fishing in fraser...so, suggestions from experienced fraser sockeye hunters would be greatly appreciated as to whether it would be worth to go this weekend...

I have never heard of the term "economic fishery" sounds like some BS ploy by dfo to differentiate a COMMERCIAL NATIVE opening from a Non Aboriginal commercial openig...anyone have any details on this...keep in mind it is unconstituational to have a racially segregated commercial fishery in Canada...

Although I agree with you on a socialist level,  the Supreme court has ruled that it is Constitutional by way of special exception. The ruling came out a few years ago. Essentially the court said that FN were a special case due to their history/persecution and an enormous amount of the lands they originally occupied were taken from them without legal representation. And as far as I know, the FN are the only group ever given the "special exception" to the Constitution.

They also get smokes, cheap.

But back to the OP, anyone have the details to the openings please

Now we all know why that the sockeye fishing was slow at times this week. Hopefully next week will be better  .

I don't want to steal the thread but this economic opening thing is crap...unless non aboriginal fishers get their opening too.

Man this is BS...natives in BC 200 years ago lived on a hunter/gathereer model...they needed a large area to collect the nutrition they needed to survive...PS the bio density of british columbia can only support a certain amount of enhabitants drawing on those resources in that fashion and first nations would never have obtained a population density like BC sees today under that type of society.  In todays society people don't need a winter range and a summer range to ensure a good supply of food and they also don't require tens of thousands of sockeye for "ceremonial purposes".....its high time Aboriginals joined the rest of Canada in the year 2006 (and onwards) as equals.

fish_oholic, generally these openings do not affect the recreational sector too much in terms of the number of fish passing by, Chris has brought that up several times. Your only concern would be to watch out for nets in the water if some choose to drift by you  closely. The only time you'll see a big dry spill is when there is a commercial opening in Johnstone Strait and the tidal Fraser River. The amounts of fish taken by First Nations and the commercial fishermen are incomparable.

I am not able to tell you how good the fishing would be though, since I've never targeted them in the non-tidal Fraser. Sorry. This weekend we're fishing for something nicer.

That is true Rodney. People are still able to catch their fish maybe not in the first few casts like most think would happen. You still have to work at it just like you would if you where really fishing.

The area E gillnet fishery would be the one that would affect fishing the most and they are not scheduled to have an opening until next week.  The scratchy fishing that you guys are experiencing has to do with the fact that most of the fish are still out in the ocean.  As of last friday, only 461,000 have been accounted for past mission (stats from the psc website) and only 150,000 fish moved through that week.  The original estimates of the total run were for 17 million.  Even if their estimates are off and they get back half of that, you can see that we have only received a fraction of what is predicted to come through.  You should see really good fishing once there are 1 or 2 million fish in the system which should happen in the next couple of weeks.

I was just looking at my notes from last year.  In 2K5 they didn't even OPEN the fishery until Sept 1.  We're one month ahead this year.
