millions fish beach at whiterock pier
« on: December 25, 2019, 09:42:41 PM »

Is this result of good ocean condition or a sign of disaster? But I wish I have a bucket there.

There was an earlier thread about this, so looks like the fish have been in the area for over a month.

Are those fish stranded at low tide? Look like anchovy

I have often seen shoals of small fish while walking along the WR Pier.

To me that looks more like spawning activity. If they are Northern Anchovy, what I could find states they may spawn year round. I could not find info on their spawning habitat.

Anchovy populations have also been on the upswing the last 4 or 5 years.

I haven't canned pickled herring in a long time. I was thinking of buying some in Jan but would rather catch it myself.

I would laugh if you use a sabiki rig there. The best tool is homedepot 5-gallon  bucket. 3 buckets and you limited out.

https://www.peacearchnews.com/news/millions-of-shimmery-fish-in-white-rock-waters-captivate/
The mass grounding was due to predators herding the fish into shore. As the tide dropped they were stranded and/or suffocated due to the mass of fish in a confined space. According to the Googles, beaching/suffocation of anchovy is not unheard of along the North American Pacific coast, Japan too.

According to Global news Anchovies are not native to the northern parts of North America and came here because of global warming. I know this isnt the case but I always find it odd that when given some opportunity, the media is quick to blame climate change.

This 17 yr old paper indicates that B.C. is within their range so I would take that Global tv claim with a grain of salt
