Better Vedder July 11th
« on: July 11, 2004, 11:49:16 PM »

Hey lads & ladies

Just got back from the Vedder campin' trip with Mrs CasinoJim and the wee CJ's.

I was gone between the 4th and 10th.

The first few days out were real tough with nothing to show for my fishing but the pound to 1 1/2 pound trout for the fire late in the day.

I have to admit I was beside myself as I tried all the tried and true combinations of leader length and weights... roe bagged ... procured...boraxed... wool every colour under the sun etc... first couple of days nothing worked ...period. I went high I went low early...late.

%*!$$*! frustrating.lol. :'(

Then one morning I set up multiple coloured wool a 2/0 gammu and went looking for a pool I had thought i had spotted after dark the night before.

I got to the pool early, about 4:30 ish ...had it to myself... sweet.

The pool was under a slight bank and emptied into  a long bar with lots of landing potential. On the far side of the bar was a deep narrow channel. I took note that any fish of size in that fast moving channel would probably be lost!

It was early the water looked dark and cold with that oily look pools get just before dawn.

On my third cast the spring hit so hard I thought for a split second I was snagged ... only to realize delight as he shot up the pool into the deepest section.

He sulked for a few seconds, this was good because it gave me time   to    gather    my    wits   and plan  how I was to handle this obviously large beast.

Now,angry and knowing he is hooked... the spring turned and headed towards the deep fast current emptying the pool.

Calmly I walked him down the bar keeping my rod well bent toward shore to keep the pressure on the spring at all times while always trying to keep his head turned towards me and away from the deep fast current as much as possible.
( My new 11' Fenwick HMX, was an awesome choice by the way Newguy thanx again for the great deal;) )

Thrice he managed to turn and peel off line as he shot towards the deep and probable freedom only to be denied time and time again ( again Kudos for the rod choice Alex ;) )

Finaly after what seemed an hour,my best guess is about 20 minutes... he turned on his side a sure sign the battle was in the end game. and a few moments later  I slid him up and  bled him on the rocks .

I would say he was about 18 -20 pounds.

Pics will be ready soon ;D

That day also yielded 2 more smaller jacks about 5-7 pds and 5 landed socks... gently released.

The next day the same pool and setup I bled a nice 12pd chrome and I hooked up countless socks.

Good night Lads & Ladies
fishing tomorrow!
same time
same pool
hopefully
same results
CJ.
