So shines a good deed in a weary world
« on: September 30, 2013, 04:46:15 PM »

So I lost my tackle box while fishing down at the end of Byrne road a couple weeks back. 90% of my gear was in there, so as you can imagine I was pretty disappointed.
Got a call yesterday from a man named Cory Adams from New West telling me that he found it floating down the river. He got my info from my fishing licence inside the box. I offered to come to him to pick it up, but he mentioned he was going to be near my area and came to drop it off for me today.
He would not accept anything I offered (6 pack, money, or sexy dashboard Hula dancer) other than a handshake and a grateful "Thank you" for his honesty, time and effort.
If you know Cory, Give him a hi-5 (or a hug if you are a lady). He is pure awesome and a shining example of good character.

Thanks again, Cory. Stoked to have my gear back!

...sigh.. why wasn't Cory around that fateful day in January two years ago..

There is a special place in hell for anyone over the age of 16 who doesn't return lost gear. It's gear man... :'(...not cash.

Fantastic.  I love hearing a positive story, especially with all of the negativity in the world.

Cory please get in politics as we need guys like you in Victoria.
Gee maybe he doesn't drink ?
Not too many guys will turn down a six pack.
( well since he didn't want the beer ,send it my way. )  ;D

Ya say Cory found your tackle box floating down river.
Did he say he pulled the tackle box by the shore side OR was he in a boat.

Guess ya forgot your box by the shore & the tide floated it & down river it went.

Good story.

There is still hope in this world.   :) Nice guy Cory.
I was not as nice to hunt down the owner. But I found a nice Simm fly bag at Furry Creek beach this pink season full of nicely tied flies. It was left on a small log on the beach which was a bit too near to the rising tide. The owner must be dropping off there while he waded to fish but forgot about it. Not knowing who the owner is and not wishing to take the flies even though I fly fish too, I just moved the bag all the way back up the beach so the tide wouldn't get it. Hope the owner came to look for it and still find it further back from where he left it. Was undecided whether I should take it and post lost and found, but not sure if the owner is on any fishing site. Hope he rushed back to find the bag still there.

I couldn't believe he turned down the 6'er either! Seemed like the only reward he needed was seeing how stoked (and stunned) I was to get my stuff back.

I assumed he found it from a boat, but said he found it shore side a ways down river from where I was casting, so I must have left it behind at low tide and it got scooped up and floated away. No more mud/rock coloured tackle boxes for me. It now has fluorescent tape all over it in hopes it will stick out more next time. It must have went for a really peaceful float as it is not overly buoyant or sealed. I got really lucky!

I will admit that I have an internal dilema what to do when I find gear in the rivers, and part of it is a ethical/moral dilema:
If I leave it where I found it, the owner may never come back for it because he may not know where he dropped it.
If I take it, there may be more of a chance to find the owner and return the item.
If I leave it, the owner may know exactly where it was left and come back for it.
If leave it, another person may take it who has no intention of returning it.
If I take it, I may not find him.
If I take it, I secretly hope I can't find the owner and can claim it.

The tackle box with ID is a no brainer. Take it and find the owner. Nicely done, Cory.

I appreciate your story, liketofish. How you handled that shows character.  I would have wrestled with that, similar to you, however I may, or may not, have arrived at the same conclusion.
