Kokanee in Region 2
« on: April 13, 2010, 02:51:09 PM »

Is there any reason why the FFSBC hatcheries can't stock any of the Region 2 (Lower Mainland) lakes with kokanee, in particular, the larger ones like Alouette, Cultus, Harrison, etc.?

Washington State stocks its coastal lakes with kokanee, including those close to the border and similar in geography and climate, such as Whatcom Lake and Lake Samish, so it can't be all that unsuitable.  It may also be some consolation to those who lament the loss of the sockeye fishery.

They're pretty rare now, aren't they?

Why did they ever stop?

cheeper to just stock trout. no one really complained when they stopped about 8 years ago.

the kokanee must be reproducing in buntzen, cuz most i catch are 9-11 inches, though i caught one 14 incher a while back.

No, it's cheaper to stock kokanee due to the size that they are stocked at (fry or fingerling rather than catchable size).

No, there have been no kokanee stockings at Buntzen Lake.

Kokanee stockings of Buntzen and Allouette are options that have been looked at to create angling opportunities in July and August around the Lower Mainland.

The last time I heard the numbers of kokanee in the Alouette are staggering. In the hundreds of thousands. Probably dont need any hatchery enhancement in that lake since if the numbers increase further the smaller the size of the fish.

The problem with July and August on the Alouette is the number of ski boats. Doesnt make for a fun time for fishermen. That launch is a nightmare during those months.

I think kokanee in other lakes would be a great idea if it worked.

Go to http://a100.gov.bc.ca/pub/fidq/stockedSpeciesSelect.do and type in Buntzen Lake in the "Gazetted Name/Alias" field. It'll give you a list of 139 stockings done in the past.

That being said Rodney .Ive seen the truck stocking lakes before, Rolley for one and the
info . never showed up on any stocking records ..
They are Gov't sites but that doesn't mean they're 100 % accurate.
