Fly fishing for carp.......
« on: December 22, 2007, 06:55:58 PM »

Well, there are a couple of lakes near me that have good populations of carp.....They would probably be lots of fun on a 5wt.......do any of you have recommendations for flies that work well on these beasts???
Happy holidays......

I have not tried my hand at this one yet, but I have done extensive reserch on the subject. From my studies I would think that a 5wt would be a bit under powered for the bute's. I remember seeing a few rise to my dry flies when I was targeting Bass in a pond Back in Ont. Amazing how they float up just like a sub after blowing off ballast. They seem to like Black Gnat, Griffith Gnat, and Tom Thumb. As for reading check out the books on the jubject penned by Dave whitlock.

A 7 weight can handle a carp no problems and you would still have a good fight (for a carp that is).

My friend has caught one on black micro leech retrieved very slow near the bottom.
It was about 2 feet long and put up a very good fight on his #5 rod, according to him.
