Harrison Confluence Sept 18th
« on: September 19, 2005, 09:15:54 AM »

Had a bit of a rough start, everything was fine when we got to Kilby, and started moving towards the confluence, managed to snap one of my rods along the way ("it happens" I told myself), got to the confluence and tried to drop the anchor. The engine stopped when i got there, so I decided to just drop the anchor and fish where I was, anchor cable is severely tangled and couldn't gte more than 4 feet of line out. Started to untangle the cable, I gradually drifted towards the pair of small islands near the fraser, engine wouldn't start, anchor was jammed, I was free drifting, couldn't paddle hard enough to get to shore. All I was able to get close to one of the islands, had one chance, threw what anchor cable I had at the island and hoped for the best. The anchor stuck, and slinged me into the island's slack water. What a way to start the day, might as well have told dad to pick me up in Mission otherwise !  :o

Back to fishing, I got out on "my" island and fished for a while off the island, caught nothing, and had to find a way to get to shore. A nice man on the "mainland" decided to help me. I got the anchor untangled and threw him the line and slinged accross the little "strait." Needless to say I made it back to the mainland and carried on fishing.

Hooked many
Landed a few
Some fair, some foul,
All releaed except one bleeder hooked in the mouth and out the eye.

Had the best luck drifting wool in the faster water, and very productive tossing spinners just above the fast water near the island. Some other guys were HAMMERING them just above the island, one on the fly, and the others tossing spoons, dunno what flies.

Overall a good day to be out, dad towed me back to the launch, and we started for home, I was dropped off in tswassen to come back to the island.

Did see a few beeks kicking fish, they saw me watching them and seemed to stop being as brutal, although it still wasn't very pretty. Not entirely sure, but I think I may have seen the worst tratment of salmon ever. A boat load of guys landing pinks, bonking them, stripping them of roe and chucking the rest of the fish back. I may have been mistaken, but every now and theI would see a gutted salmon go flying back into the river. I had no phone, and they were out of yelling range. Disgusting if they were doing this.

I was at the Harrisson Fraser confluence in my boat about a week ago and also had good luck with the pinks. However, as a new boater on the Fraser I was not aware that a large part of the Harrison mouth is really an island, and at current water levels is about 1' deep. Had a nasty surprise and partially ran aground on such a "submerged island". Yes we have a depth sounder, but no the depth alarm was not set, and I was focusing more on rising salmon than the sounder (we were nowhere near shore and slowly approaching some nearby anchored boats fishing). Fortunately we managed to recover without injury to selves or boat. We later observed some other boaters approaching the area by closely following the western shore of the Harrison mouth (to avoid the submerged island). We did this as well on the way out, but were a little concerned as the map showed this as passing by Calamity point (a big X and danger warning on the map). Just thought I'd pass on our newby boaters experience about this area.

We hit it too actually, there was ~1 ft of water, our prop is bashed up as it is, and that finally did the damage to make up change the prop. No personal injury, that thing should seriously be marked or at least outlined at the launch or something.
