July 28th Vedder report
« on: July 29, 2004, 07:52:26 AM »

After reading Normfish's report and looking at Fulcrum's photo, I took the afternoon off to check the upper river.  Started hooking and releasing sockeye.  Concentrated on the deeper and faster moving water to get a spring and away from the sockeye.  I had the impression sockeye would not take roe, I was wrong.  I had another impression they would take red and black wool less and again was wrong.  While I was there, I only saw one spring jump and saw one being fought.  Either I was at the wrong  spot or Normfish and Fulcrum had caught all the springs.  I did not have the energy in the heat to try another location.

The best bait for sockeye while fishing in clear water conditions is krill, or pro cured small ghost shrimp. I also have caught them using roe and pro cured prawn tails as well.

Once the summer sockeye run get into the Fraser in good numbers and they have not been any commercial openings that make fishing tough I am going to try the Sumas or Harrison mouths.

Of course there is a slim chance they will open the Harrison River proper like they did a few years ago which made for some great float fishing.

Will let you know if I have any success.
